How to Scan a QR Code on Android: Camera, Google Lens, Quick Settings and Fixes

Android phones come from many manufacturers, so the exact buttons vary from one phone to the next. The good news is that almost every recent Android phone can scan a QR code without installing a separate scanner app. You just need to know where the scanner is hiding on your model.

This guide walks through every common way to scan a QR code on Android, from the camera app to Google Lens and screenshots, plus what to do when nothing happens. Menu names differ by brand and Android version, so if a label does not match exactly, look for the closest option.

The quick answer

  1. Open your phone's Camera app.
  2. Point the rear camera at the QR code so the whole code is on screen.
  3. Hold steady for a moment until a link, icon or pop-up appears.
  4. Check the address, then tap it to open.

If your camera does not react, try Google Lens or the Scan QR code tile in Quick Settings, described below.

Method 1: The camera app

Many Android phones, including Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy models, recognize QR codes directly in the camera.

If the camera does not react

Some phones have a setting that turns QR scanning on or off. Open the camera, go to its settings (often a gear icon) and look for an option such as Scan QR codes or Google Lens suggestions. On Samsung phones, this is usually in Camera settings. If your camera has no such option, use one of the methods below.

Method 2: Google Lens

Google Lens is built into many Android phones and is available in the Google app. It can read QR codes from the camera or from images already on your phone.

When Lens recognizes the code, it shows the link or action at the bottom of the screen. Tap it to continue.

Method 3: The Scan QR code tile in Quick Settings

Recent Android versions include a Scan QR code tile in Quick Settings, the panel you open by swiping down from the top of the screen.

  1. Swipe down once or twice to open Quick Settings.
  2. Look for Scan QR code. If it is not there, tap the edit (pencil) icon and drag the tile into your active tiles.
  3. Tap it to open a dedicated scanner with a viewfinder.

This is handy because it opens straight to scanning, without camera modes or extra buttons. On some phones you can also reach it from the lock screen.

Method 4: Samsung's built-in options

Samsung Galaxy phones have a few extra ways to scan:

Method 5: A QR code in a screenshot or image

If the code is already on your phone, in a screenshot, email, chat or PDF, you cannot point your camera at it. Instead:

Scanning WiFi QR codes

Android has good built-in support for WiFi QR codes. Scanning one with the camera or Lens usually offers to connect to the network without typing a password. On many phones you can also open Settings → Network & internet → Internet (or Connections → Wi-Fi on Samsung) and tap the QR icon next to Add network to scan directly.

You can also share your own WiFi as a QR code from the same settings screen on many phones. To make a printable one for guests, see our guide to making a WiFi QR code.

What happens after you scan

Scanning does not send a message or place a call by itself. You still confirm the action.

Check the link before you tap

Most Android scanners show the web address first. Before you open it:

Public QR codes are sometimes covered with stickers that lead to fake sites. Our guide on how to check if a QR code is safe explains what to look for.

Android will not scan the QR code? Try this

  1. Clean the camera lens. A fingerprint can blur the image enough to stop a scan.
  2. Improve the light and avoid glare on shiny surfaces. Some scanners offer a flashlight button.
  3. Change distance and angle. Hold the phone straight on, then move a little closer or farther away.
  4. Turn on QR scanning in camera settings if your phone has that option.
  5. Try another method: Lens, the Quick Settings tile or Samsung's scanner.
  6. Update the Google app and your camera app, and restart the phone.

If no phone can read the code, the code itself is probably the problem: printed too small, low contrast, damaged or missing its blank margin. See QR code not scanning, QR code colors that scan and the QR code quiet zone.

Testing your own QR codes on Android

Before you print a QR code for a menu, flyer or event:

  1. Create it with our free generator and download it as a PNG.
  2. Scan it from your computer screen with your Android camera and with Google Lens.
  3. Print a test copy at the final size and scan it from a realistic distance.
  4. Ask someone with an iPhone to scan it too. Our guide on how to scan a QR code on iPhone shows what they will see.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an app to scan QR codes on Android?

Usually not. Most recent Android phones can scan QR codes with the camera app, Google Lens or the Scan QR code tile in Quick Settings.

Where is the QR scanner on my Android phone?

Check the camera app first, then Quick Settings for a Scan QR code tile, then the Lens icon in the Google app or search bar. On Samsung phones, also check the Quick panel and Samsung Internet.

How do I scan a QR code from a screenshot on Android?

Open the screenshot in Google Photos and tap Lens. On supported phones, you can also use Circle to Search to select the code on screen.

Why won't my Android camera scan QR codes?

QR scanning may be turned off in camera settings, the lens may be dirty, or the lighting and angle may be poor. If other phones also fail, the code itself may be too small, low contrast or damaged.

Is it safe to scan QR codes on Android?

Scanning only reads the code. The risk comes from what it opens. Check the link before tapping and avoid unfamiliar sites asking for logins or payments.
