How to Make a QR Code for a Phone Number (Scan to Call)

A phone number QR code lets people call you without typing a single digit. They point their camera at the code, tap the prompt that appears, and the phone dialer opens with your number already filled in. It is a small convenience that removes a common mistake: misreading or mistyping a number from a flyer, a sign or a business card.

This guide shows how to make a scan-to-call QR code for free with QR Studio, how the tel: format works, how to write numbers so they work from anywhere, and how to test the code before you print it.

How a phone number QR code works

A QR code just stores text. For a call code, that text is a tel link, the same kind of link that starts a call when you tap a phone number on a website. It looks like this:

When a phone scans it, the camera app recognizes the link and offers to call the number. Nothing is dialed automatically. The person sees the number and decides whether to tap Call, which is good for both privacy and trust.

Step by step: make a phone QR code with QR Studio

  1. Open the QR code generator and choose the Text tab.
  2. Type tel: followed by your number in international format, with no spaces, for example tel:+12025550143.
  3. Check the preview. The line under the code shows the exact text that was encoded and how many characters it has. It should match what you typed.
  4. Adjust the size and colors if you like, keeping a dark code on a light background with strong contrast.
  5. Download the PNG and test it on at least two phones before you print or share it.

Use the Text tab, not the URL tab. The URL tab is built for web links and adds https:// in front of anything that does not already start with http or mailto:, which would turn your number into a broken web address.

Write the number in international format

The safest format is a plus sign, the country code, then the full number, with no spaces or symbols. That way the code works no matter where the person scanning it is, or which country their phone plan is from.

Number as printedWhat to encodeWhy
(202) 555-0143, U.S.tel:+12025550143+1 is the country code for the U.S. and Canada
1-800-555-0199, toll-freetel:+18005550199Same format; drop the dashes
020 7946 0018, U.K.tel:+442079460018+44, and drop the leading 0

Worked example

Say your business card shows (305) 555-0172 and you are in the U.S.

  1. Remove the brackets, space and dash: 3055550172.
  2. Add the country code with a plus: +13055550172.
  3. Put tel: in front: tel:+13055550172.

That is 16 characters: 4 for tel: and 12 for the number. A code that short has very few, large squares, which makes it easy to scan even when printed small.

Vanity numbers with letters

If you advertise a number like 1-800-555-CARS, convert the letters to digits using the phone keypad (C = 2, A = 2, R = 7, S = 7). So 555-CARS becomes 555-2277, and the code stores tel:+18005552277. Letters inside a tel link will not dial.

Extensions and menu options

Adding an extension is possible but less reliable. The tel format allows ;ext=, for example tel:+12025550143;ext=204, and some people use a comma to add a pause before extra digits. Support for both varies between phones and dialer apps. If an extension matters, test it carefully on the phones your audience uses, and print the extension in text next to the code as a backup.

Keep the code easy to scan

Because a phone number code holds so little data, it stays simple and scans well. A few habits still help:

Test before you print

  1. Scan with an iPhone and an Android phone, using the built-in camera app.
  2. Check the number shown in the call prompt digit by digit.
  3. Place a real test call to make sure it rings the right line.
  4. Test the printed proof at its final size and from the distance people will scan it.

If the code does not scan at all, see why a QR code is not scanning for fixes like contrast, quiet zone and size.

Good uses for a scan-to-call code

Phone code vs other options

You want people to...Best choice
Call you right nowtel: QR code (this guide)
Save your name, number and email for latervCard contact QR code
Message you on WhatsAppA link QR code with https://wa.me/12025550143 (number with country code, no plus)
Email you insteadAn email QR code

A vCard is often the better choice for business cards, because people can save you as a contact instead of calling on the spot. QR Studio's vCard tab has a phone field for that.

Privacy

A phone number QR code contains your number in plain text. Anyone who scans or photographs it can read it, just like a number printed on paper. For public signs and posters, consider using a business line rather than a personal mobile number.

Frequently asked questions

Can a QR code call a number automatically?

No. Scanning a tel QR code shows the number and offers to call it, but the person still has to tap Call. Nothing is dialed without their action.

Do I need the plus sign and country code?

It is the safest choice. A number in international format, like tel:+12025550143, works whether the person scanning is at home or abroad, and on any carrier.

Why does my phone QR code open a web page instead of calling?

The code was probably made in a URL field that added https:// in front of tel:. Make it again in QR Studio's Text tab and check the encoded text under the preview.

Does a phone number QR code expire?

No. A tel code made with QR Studio is static: the number is stored in the code itself, with no redirect or service in between. It keeps working as long as the number does.
